Put yourself in the client’s mind and ask “What’s in it for me?” If your ads or products do not clearly define this, and tell the customer how you will give him what he desires, how this product will benefit him, it is unlikely you will make a sale.

Educate Yourself

Research, educate, learn and read everything you can about your product or field. Observe other successful people in your field. What are they doing that contributed to their success?

Develop An Advertising Campaign With An Appropriate Budget.

Don’t go after the general public. Be specific. Analyze who your target client is and how your product will benefit them. Target your marketing to appeal directly to them. You may have to test what type of advertising will work for you, whether it is newsprint or pay-per-click advertising using highly targeted keywords. Remember go for the BENEFIT of what your product will give them. Once you find out what works, stick to it.

Track Your Advertising.

Why go through all that advertising testing if you don’t know where your sales are coming from. Create different email addresses or different URLs to use for each ad you post. Don’t forget to record what you have done at the time you are doing it. Be consistent in your process.

Tweak And Test YourAds.

Take a good ad idea and then “split run” the ad. That means create a polar opposite ad and run them at the same time. A positive statement vs. negative statement, as an example. Find out which ad works best. Take the better ad and turn it into a question rather than a statement. Again, test them and see which works better. Try creating a sense of urgency in your ads. Try creating an emotional response within your clients. Repeat and test different variations often. Keep testing until you see what works. Once you find that out, expand on it and in a big way.

Create Your Own Mailing List.

Your own existing or previous customers are a gold mine for you. It is amazing and a shame at how many business owners forget about their own customer base. If they bought from you the first time, it is likely that they will again. Stay in touch with newsletters, be it monthly or quarterly. Give them something that will remind them of you – an up and coming sale, a holiday event, or a discount on a particular product or a particular time frame. Be creative. If you forget about them, they will forget about you. That is a fact.

Know That You Will Fail.

However, it is not really failure. It is just telling you something that needs to be reviewed and corrected. Try new things and learn from the results. Don’t get discouraged. Pick yourself up and jeeo moving forward. Your perspective on failure can make the difference between a positive and negative experience. Are you failing or just learning?

Treat Yourself – You Deserve It.

It’s hard work developing a business. Reward yourself with your small successes along the way, not just the big ones. Remember to give yourself breaks. Get out of the office and get a breath of fresh air. Even 15 minutes can be a great refresher. Go visit your friends. Go have some FUN. Buy yourself something that you have been wanting. It doesn’t have to be big – just something that you have wanted but afraid to buy. If you don’t treat yourself, your business will become resentment and anchor around your neck. This is not why you started your own business. Don’t forget why you began this in the first place.

You do not have to be a slave to your business but also know that there is no such thing as something for nothing. Create an idea, have the desire to accomplish it, make and plan, work hard with consistency, and NEVER GIVE UP. Do not let negative people dissuade for you from your desire.
